Would you rather have a mouse named Ben or a medication named Ben? My doctors spoke the other day and decided that the next best step for me would be to start on an infusion therapy called Benlysta. Benlysta is the first treatment in 50 years that’s been approved for the treatment of Lupus. Wow. THIS is why I always try to spread lupus awareness and why I fundraise…50 years is way too long, and more research and help is needed!
Going into the appointment I knew that this was an option. Hearing the words though was different. The medication I’ve been taking has all been to suppress my lupus symptoms, not to treat it (besides plaquenil, which is an antimalarial used to help prevent and make flares less severe). I have to admit, I cried the majority of that evening. The thought of having to go to a hospital over and over again to receive an infusion is scary, unknown and heartbreaking but also encouraging. This could be the medicine that makes me feel like ME again…the me that I’ve been missing and fighting to get back for months now.
Next week I’ll meet with my rheumatologist to discuss the details, and then I’ll meet Ben. Who knows…maybe he’ll become my new best friend.
